Suffolk Cooperative Library System

Present: Mary Koferl, Inez Foster, Nick Zino, Carolyn Agenjo, Melissa Andruski, Lori King, Teresa Schwind, Beth Haney, Jo-Ann Carhart, Mark Rothenberg, Natalie Naylor, Cathy Ball, Barbara Johnson, Cynthia Sciaaca, Mariella Ostroski Marie Horney, and Diane Holliday.

First order of business: The meeting was officially called to order at 9:07 am, at which time a discussion was opened on the Committee’s planned trip to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum to be held on Thursday, May 21. The cost of the trip will be $37.50, which will include a tour of the mansion followed by a high tea in the library. Inez Foster reported that emails had been sent out to all Committee members as well as to the SCLA listserve.

Second order of business: Cathy Ball reported on the preparations for the Long Island Library Conference. The Local History Committee has secured a spot in Session II from 11:30 -12:15. Stephen Sanfilippo will give a lecture on his research on whaling song that were sung on Long Island. The Conference Committee will take care of all publicity.
Cindy Sciaaca proposed that we bring last year’s brochures to place on the RASD table at the Conference, and Mary Koferl agreed to make up bookmarks containing the website address for the Local History Committee. Jo-Ann Carhart mentioned that RASD is looking for volunteers to man their table. Anyone interested should email her.

Third order of business: A discussion was held on whether or not the Local History Committee had by-laws and if they were needed. It was decided that as other RASD Committees did not have them, they were not necessary. However, it was agreed that we should update our Mission Statement and members were asked to bring in sample local history statements from their libraries if they were in existence. Further discussion was tabled until our next meeting.

Fourth order of business: Mary Koferl proposed that we take a new survey of member libraries and historical societies. Mariella Ostroski, Teresa Schwind, Lori King, Beth Haney, Inez Foster, and Cathy Ball volunteered to form a committee to determine the content of the survey.

The next meeting of the Local History Committee will be on Thursday, September 24. Barbara Johnson will inquire about using the East Northport Public Library for the meeting, which will start at 10 am following refreshments at 9:30 am. Cindy Sciaaca will look into contacting a speaker to give a lecture on mounting and displaying photographs, paintings, textiles and other objects in your collection.

The floor was opened for attendees to discuss anything new that was going on in their Local History Rooms.

Cindy Sciaaca reported that Historic Suffolk County day would be on October 11th this year at the Setauket Neighborhood House.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:58 am, at which time most attendees broke for a short break before attending the Long Island Forum meeting at 10:30 am where a lecture was given Geoffrey K. Fleming on his book, A shared aesthetic: artists of Long Island’s North Fork.

Respectfully submitted,
